Safe

The Blue Diversion Toilet is safe for users, their environment and for the service personnel.

High water quality

Thanks to an innovative water recovery technology inside the Blue Diversion Toilet, there is always pathogen-free, clean water available. This is made possible by the multi-barrier treatment system built inside the back wall of the toilet. Learn more about the water quality...

The basis for the on-site water treatment is the three-stream separation in the toilet pan. Undiluted urine, dry faeces and the flush and wash water are separated in the source-separating toilet pan. Although the flush water is not used for transporting the faeces and the urine, the used water is still contaminated with some faecal matter and some urine. However, compared to a flush toilet, the contamination of the water is very low. This is why the water can be treated safely on-site and recycled without using a large amount of energy. Learn more about the toilet's energy requirements...

Process description of the multi-barrier treatment

  • The used water is separated by the urine-water-separation mechanism below the toilet pan.
  • The separated water is pumped into the treatment tank, which is a membrane-bioreactor. A biofilm (1) converts organic matter and ammonia. Then, the water is filtered by gravity through the ultrafiltration membrane (2) that retains pathogenic organisms (bacteria and virus).
  • The clean water is pumped into the clean water tank where it is polished by an electrolysis unit (3). Traces of organic matter and ammonia are converted, and colour removed.
  • The water in the clean water tank is protected against the regrowth of pathogens by the residual chlorine (4) produced by the electrolysis. The water is ready for reuse for flushing, hand washing and personal hygiene.

Zero discharge of water

The on-site water recovery system is a closed system. No water is discharged, preventing the breeding of mosquitoes.

Safely sealed, secure & hygienic faeces container

Safe and hygienic working conditions for the service personnel are secured by a mechanism that seals the faeces container before it can be exchanged.
